Wes Moore - One of the main characters that grew up in Baltimore with his mother and father, and went through a series of hardships that made him into a better and more independent man. He changed from a kid that ran into drug deal to a man of high stature. He later graduated from the prestige school, Oxford University.
Joy Moore – The mother of Wes Moore that struggled to raise her children, so they could get an outstanding education, and a better life. In order to find her children a better life, she moved from Baltimore to the Bronx where her parents lived.
Nikki - This is Wes Moore’s older sister that is independent, smart, and caring. She protects Wes and her younger sister. She is also the oldest of Joy’s children. Nikki later ran her own event planning business.
Shani - This is Wes Moore’s youngest sister which he normally feels very protective over. She later graduated from Princeton University and then went to Stanford Law School.
Westley Moore - This is Wes Moore’s father which he loved. Westley had many names for Wes including “Main Man”, but Wes didn’t get to see him much of his life because Westley passed away when Wes was only three years old.
Bill - He was Joy’s husband before Westley. He was addicted to drugs and alcohol, making him violent and aggressive which led Joy to the decision of leaving him for good.
Justin- He was a very good and loyal friend to Wes. They met in the private school that Wes attended while at the Bronx. Justin became very successful in life even though he went through hardships.
Rev. Dr. James Thomas- This is Wes’s grandfather that immigrated from Jamaica to the United States, and moved to the Bronx.
Winell Thomas- This is Wes’s grandmother that moved to Jamaica from Cuba where she met James.
Shea- This is a friend of Wes’s that was driven to the drug business where he got problems with the law.
The Other Wes Moore
Wes Moore- He’s one of the main character that has a dark beginning of dealing with drugs, and shootings. He didn’t choose the right role models to follow; he followed the life of his drug dealing older brother, Tony. Wes then starts dealing drugs which progressed to a very high level that it became difficult to put to an end. Wes has several children with different mothers; he later has to give them financial aid which puts him into a tight situation. His extreme acts eventually force him to be sentenced to life in prison.
Mary- This is Wes’s mother which struggles to give her children a fresh start to a better life by moving from the city to the suburbs. Mary is a dedicated and determined mother that only wants what’s best for her children. She later ends up taking care of six children which includes three of Wes’s.
Tony- He’s Wes’s older brother that is sucked into the world of drugs in which he constantly warns Wes not to be a part of. He’s been involved in shooting where he has been shot a couple times before. He later gets sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Sergeant Bruce Prothero.
Woody- He’s one of Wes’s friends that spend most of his life coming in and out of prison, but he finally found a stable job as a truck driver in Baltimore.
Alicia- She is the mother of Wes’s two children he had with her, but she’s currently raising one of them. She later finds a job in the Transportation Security Administration. Also she lives near Wes’s mother in Aberdeen.
Cheryl- She’s a mother of two children that she had with Wes. She’s lost custody of those two children due to her drug addiction. She went paralyzed after falling down a flight of stairs, and she shortly died at age twenty-four.
Ray- He’s the man that hurt Wes for being with his girlfriend, and soon after the beating, Wes and his friend Woody searched and shot Ray.
Levy-He’s a friend of Wes’s that encouraged Wes to attend Job Corps. Levy had to work long hours to be able to get his GED.
Sergeant Bruce Prothero- He’s the thirty-fiver year old police veteran who’s been murdered by Tony. He had a wife and five children before he has been forcefully taken away from them just for following his instincts to go after the robbers.
White Boy- He’s one of Wes’s friends when Wes moved to the suburbs. He dropped out of high school, and became a waiter in Atlanta.
